POLYMER ENGINEERING CENTRE, KANGAN BATMAN TAFE , BROADMEADOWS, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA

Project Dates: Completed 2000
Client: Kangan Batman TAFE
Size: 2,200 square metres

The Polymer Engineering Centre is a simulated plastics manufacturing plant, incorporating thermoplastic processing and recycling techniques, with supporting laboratory, meeting and multi-media/ multi-use staff and teaching spaces.

This addition to the Kangan Batman Campus takes from its context the extruded lozenge-shape of the verandah columns. The building references its use- the technique of extrusion through a single section used in some plastics manufacturers is magnified to the scale of the buildings section. The lozenge reappears not only in details of windows and decorative panels but as the buildings structural section repeated along its 80 metre length.

Clad in a double skin of translucent plastic, the building transforms into a lantern at night. The white tube like form dominates the sloping site and is visible from far below the campus. At the scale of a two-storey building, and in the context of surfaces comprised largely of plastics, the building evokes a futuristic fantasy of lightness, plasticity and the ephemeral.

Knowledge Gap

I really like words - but I really love pictures. It's just one of the many dualisms I happily live with everyday. For me pictures generally act as springboards, whereas words are more like anchors. Recently I've discovered FLICKR - the image sharing community - and it's bounced me into a whole new world of visual knowledge. Take the picture above for example. Where is that from? Get this... Tehran! I cannot believe my own ignorance. A diet of BBC news has caused me to consider Tehran like some kind of dusty Baghdad equivalent, but taking a look at the photographic collection of Mahdi Ayat has totally shattered that illusion... I mean, get this, living in Tehran you can have the buzz of the big city but if you get bored, it's built right next door to a range of snow-capped mountains so you can go blast some white stuff for a few hours!

Five cannibals get appointed as programmers in an IT company. During the welcoming ceremony the boss says: "You're all part of our team now. You can earn good money here, and you can go to the company canteen for something to eat. So don't trouble the other employees".

The cannibals promise not to trouble the other employees. Four weeks later the boss returns and says: "You're all working very hard, and I'm very satisfied with all of you. One of our cleaners has disappeared however. Do any of you know what happened to her?" The cannibals disavow all knowledge of the missing cleaner. After the boss has left, the leader of the cannibals says to the others: "Which of you idiots ate the cleaner?" A hand rises hesitantly, to which the leader of the cannibals says: "You fool! For four weeks we've been eating the Team Leaders, Managers, and Project Managers so no-one would notice anything, and you have to go and eat the cleaner!"

When Architects Lost The Ball to Car Designers?

It was a big race ... architects in america where reaching to skys in 1920's while american car maker Ford where only provides 4 wheels+ 1 engine + seating place and something to control what so called the 4rd generation cars since 1896. Industrial reveloution was entering a new era but architects were the real arm in function and art. Ford has not been changed it's look from 1904 up to 1938 - World War 2.

FORD EVELOUTION 1910, 1917, 1932-34

For sure there was alot of eveloution for cars but the impact was not that much in comparison with the Architecture and Construction ...  but somewhere and somehow architects lost their winning ball to industrial designers and especially car designers ... ford somehow realized that there is a competition between long running architecture or there was the need of consumers to demand sudden changes in transportation industry  and those major changes make people to figure out that they need to have art in that?

how it is possible that the new era is getting far behind the Auto design industry?! ... is the demand of consumers are low for architects? ... or architects reached to the point that office buildings and mass-rsidential buildings are in the final front of the known construction and structure technology and there is no way but to have another industrial reveloution?

where is the balance? do we need it? why?

the reallity is that we don't really think outside the box ... if we ever have something original, new, and smart, it shows that we think in the bigger box ... so there is allways a next level to think about!
